A visit to Silver Dollar City

“How long have you been coming here?” So began the questioning by one of my grandchildren.

“Well, it has been a long time. That’s for sure.” I replied.

After a long, hot day at the park, while most of the family members who made this trip are fast asleep, I am sitting in a semi-darkened room listening to the sounds of peaceful slumber and trying to remember when I first visited Silver Dollar City.

One date is certain. My senior class trip in May of 1976 included a visit to SDC. We took in other local attractions, but SDC has always stood out in my memory as the highlight of our visit to the Ozarks. Plus, I purchased a harmonica that day that has traveled many, many miles with me since.

There may have been one other visit. I have a vague recollection of visiting the park when I was much younger, but nothing specific. Regardless, even though a lot of water has passed under the bridge since my first visit, there is one special place in the park that seems to have a magnetic pull on me each time I visit.

It is not a ride; and, not a show, per se. It is an attraction, of a sort. But, it involves participation. It is Grandfather’s Mansion. The slanted floors, mirrored walls, upside down room, and other novelties make a visit to Grandpa’s house fun for everyone. It is especially fun when you visit the room with some of your own grandkids.

It was like history repeated itself again today. We entered the SDC and made a beeline across the park in order to go directly to Grandfather’s Mansion.

I am grateful for places like this. For days likes this. For memories that make moments like today’s umpteenth visit to Grandfather’s Mansion much more special than the first time I visited.

I am grateful for a family that loves SDC like I do. Few things give me more pleasure than being here with them—having fun with them—watching them build the kind of memories that will bring them and, hopefully, their grandchildren back to this special place some day.
